Pick-up meeting for the field on the 10th:

We strongly advise that you arrive one day (8/10/2017) before the event to get on time for the first day of the workshop.

For the ESRs, your presence is mandatory from the 9th to the 13th.

For leading scientists and supervisors, the ENIGMA meeting will take place on the 12th and 13th with the 12th evening a social event. The program of the 12th and 13th may be found here.

Getting in and out of Liège:

By plane:

The principal airport is Brussels National (Zaventem), Liège is then easy to reach by train from the aiport terminal.

Brussels South Charleroi is the main low-cost airport with Ryanair flights. There is then a bus connection to  Charleroi train station (7km from the airport) that can then  take you to Liège.

By train:

The main international railway station is the Liège Guillemins station. From there you may reach the city center using TEC bus no 1, 4, 25 or 48 (single ticket costs 1.9€ and a 8 tickets card costs 8.8€). There is a TEC selling point in the station. Taxis are always available at the station.

By car:

Google is your friend 😉

Traveling between the different locations of the workshop

The University of Liège is principally located in the Liège city centre and the Sart Tilman campus situated ten kilometers to the south.

Day 1 will take place in the campus of Sart Tilman which you may reach from the center by using the bus 48.

Days 2 and 3 will take place at the experimental site of Hermalle-sous-Argenteau. We will have vans and will pick you up in the morning at 8h15 Quai de Rome 27 and at 8h30 at the Aquarium Museum (see top of the page for detailed maps).

In case we miss you or you miss us, you may still reach the site using line 140 and stop at ARGENTEAU PONT DE L’AUTOROUTE. or line 78 and stop at HERMALLE RUE D’ARGENTEAU 9.

Days 4 and 5 will take place in the city so you should be able to reach the University by foot or by bus easily from the hotels.

For days 1, 4 and 5 the lunch will be provided through the ENIGMA network by catering at the workshop and meeting location. Any special request should be mentioned in advance (e.g. vegetarian).

For days 2 and 3, we will be on the field where we can easily get sandwiches, salads or even French fries nearby.

On the evening of day 4, a social event including dinner (see above) will be organized by the local organizers and provided by the ENIGMA network.

On the evenings of days 1, 2 and 3 we encourage you to explore together the city and try a few of the many good places where you can eat (if going out in a big crowd, it is always best to book in advance):

We will have four geophysical stations on the field:

  1. electrical resistivity tomography and time-domain induced polarisation,
  2. borehole spectral induced polarisation,
  3. electromagnetic induction/surface seismics,
  4. borehole ground penetrating radar.

The ITN ESRs will be split in four groups which will rotate between the different stations over the two days of field work (half a day per station). Lectures notes on each methods will be available on the e-campus platform dedicated to the workshop. The introductory lectures will be given on the first day (monday) together with a presentation of the instruments.

Two new projects start at ULiège in Geophysics, we are recruiting !

We are looking for highly motivated students to take up two PhD positions in the projects CHAR and RAWFILL.

In RAWFILL, the PhD (3 years) will use and develop geophysical methods for landfill mining initiatives on sites located in Belgium and France with advanced geophysical methods and guided sampling. It is supervised by Professor F. Nguyen and is in close collaboration with the British Geological Survey.

In CHAR, the PhD (4 years) will use and develop geophysical methods to assess the spatio-temporal patterns of soil hydraulic properties and root water uptake and their relationship to charcoal enrichment (supervised by Prs. F. Nguyen and S. Garré, in Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech Campus).

Profile: a MSc degree or equivalent in geophysics, physics, soil or geo science, engineering, or related discipline. A strong background in physics or geophysics, applied mathematics, and numerical methods is an asset

Maurits Van Hoorde (and co-authors)!

Congratulations to Maurits for doing a great Msc thesis in KU Leuven, and thanks to Thomas and Gael who helped and supervised Maurits in his 3D acquisition of the ERT data. A great work now published in Engineering Geology, with the help of two companies: G-Tec who gave us the opportunity to work on the field site, and  help on the field for collecting the data and Windvision for providing us the permission to work on their site and their interest in this work.

Abstract:

The acquisition of a full 3D survey on a large area of investigation is difficult, and from a practitioner’s point of view, very costly. In high-resolution 3D surveys, the number of electrodes increases rapidly and the total number of electrode combinations becomes very large. In this paper, we propose an innovative 3D acquisition procedure based on the roll-along technique. It makes use of 2D parallel lines with additional cross-line measurements. However, in order to increase the number of directions represented in the data, we propose to use cross-line measurements in several directions. Those cross-line measurements are based on dipole-dipole configurations as commonly used in cross-borehole surveys. We illustrate the method by investigating the subsurface geometry in a karstic environment for a future wind turbine project. We first test our methodology with a numerical benchmark using a synthetic model. Then, we validate it through a field case application to image the 3D geometry of karst features and the top of unaltered bedrock in limestone formations. We analyze the importance of cross-line measuring and analyze their capability for accurate subsurface imaging. The comparison with standard parallel 2D surveys clearly highlighted the added value of the cross-lines measurements to detect those structures. It provides crucial insight in subsurface geometry for the positioning of the future wind turbine foundation. The developed method can provide a useful tool in the design of 3D ERT survey to optimize the amount of information collected within a limited time frame.

A new project starts this january 2017: ENIGMA

ENIGMA is an Innovative Training Network funded by the European Commission that brings together 21 partners (15 academics and 6 industrials) from 8 European countries.

The ENIGMA ITN ( European training Network for in situ imaGing of dynaMic processes in heterogeneous subsurfAce environments) aims at training a new generation of young researchers in the development of innovative methods for imaging process dynamics in subsurface hydrosystems, in order to enhance understanding and predictive modelling capacities and to transfer these innovations to the economic sector.

The 15 young future PhD students will contribute to develop the spatial representation of subsurface heterogeneity, fluxes, chemical reactions and microbial activity, through the integration of data and approaches from geophysics, hydrology, soil physics, and biochemistry.
The network ENIGMA gather 21 partners (15 academic and 6 industrial) from 8 European countries.
Each of the 15 future PhD students will conduct the research work in 2 or 3 institutions, in collaboration with the industrial partners.

Established in January 2017, the Enigma ITN will run until December 2020.

A new PhD…Congratulations to Gael Dumont

Fantastic achievement by Gael who completed his phd degree with a great presentation, with a few nicely placed jokes (as always) ! The whole team is very proud of your accomplishments. Great seeing our colleagues Remi Clément from IRSTEA (France), and Jon Chambers from BGS (UK) and discuss with them. The presence of Shanks with Laurent Dauge was also a great source of discussion.
